CBT-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
By Barbara Reade LCPC
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a therapy that centers on the belief that what you think creates how you then feel. It believes that the events that happen around us, although they affect us, do not have to determine how we feel and manage ourselves and our lives-even in very difficult circumstances.
It suggests that we experience the most overwhelming feelings when we are functioning with distorted feelings. so when the thoughts that cause these feelings are updated, into a more factually based perspective, our feelings will not be overwhelming. This therapy does not deny the present reality, but works to put it in a healthier perspective.
Further, thought distortion can happen from either seeing situations as much greater than the facts indicate, or much less than the facts show. Thinking going to either extreme causes more intense, and difficult pain and suffering than needs to occur, in most circumstances.
