Trauma Symptoms

Are you suffering from the symptoms of trauma?

1. Do you find that you are having involuntary thoughts or thoughts that intrude into your regular activities, about the traumatic event?

2. Do you have dreams or nightmares about the event?

3. Do you dream of the location where the trauma happened, without the actual event, but with some of the feelings or events tied to the trauma?

4. Are you having strong waves of feelings about the trauma, or do you find yourself acting like you did at the time of the trauma?

5. Do you get extremely upset (angry, tearful, confused, panicky, or anxious) at people, places, or events that remind you of the trauma?

6. Do you become distressed around the anniversary of the trauma (like on the same day of the month when it happened?)?

7. Have you had times, since the trauma, when you’ve felt emotionally numb or dead inside (other than feelings of anger or resentment)?

8. Have you tried to avoid thinking, feeling, or talking about the event?

9. Since the trauma have you felt alienated and apart from others?

10. Have you felt a sense of foreboding or doom since this traumatic event? Do you feel you will die young, or never experience the rewards of living?

11. Are you unable to remember part or all of the circumstances about the trauma? ( like when it happened, when you heard about it, what you did at the time in response to it, etc.) 12. Do you have difficulty getting or falling asleep? Or is it fitful or disturbed?

13. Are you getting irritable more, at times not associated with any present stress or problem? Are you feeling too tense, at least at times, leading to periods when you have outbursts or anger, at family, friends, or co-workers?

14. Are you having difficulty concentrating?

15. Are you extremely concerned about your safety, or the safety of others? Is this making you overprotective to yourself or others? 16.Are you easily startled? Do you jump at loud noises or sudden actions that remind you in some way of the traumatic event?

17. Do you have physical reactions when events happen that remind you of the trauma? ( like sweating, vomiting, dizziness, stomach cramping, shaking, or physical pain-not caused by any medical condition?)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, that you did not have before the traumatic event, you may be having a trauma reaction.

If you are experiencing more than 3 of these symptoms it is important that you seek further counseling consultation, to help relieve and decrease the possibility of long term serious effects.
